The layout was chosen to maximize the possibilities of the EPUB3 fixed layout format.  While this makes the book inaccessible to a variety of eBook readers,  the book is accessible to iBooks, Adobe Digital Editions, and the Readium plugin for Google Chrome.  Any platform, whether desktop, laptop, or tablet that can run one of these apps, and that is at least as large as the original iPad (held horizontally) will be able to access Biology Through the Eyes of Food.  It is likely that additional eBook readers will become available that can manage the EPUB3 format, and that can display HTML5 interactive animations.


The specific content of Biology Through the Eyes of Food was chosen, as described in these Author’s Notes, based on the author’s experience with college students not majoring in biology.  When asked to describe scientific phenomena in their own words, students typically describe their current conceptions of those phenomena, even when based on alternative conceptions.  The author collaborated with non-majors for some 12 years in an effort to identify as many of these alternative conceptions as possible — and then develop more-effective teaching strategies.


Biology Through the Eyes of Food presents these alternate teaching strategies.  Some strategies are markedly different from the traditional approaches used in traditional textbooks.  Assessment of student-learning has indicated that these novel teaching strategies can eliminate alternative conceptions — or, at least, avoid creating these alternative conceptions (as some traditional teaching strategies appear to do.)


Author’s Notes is not an exhaustive listing of every non-traditional approach used in Biology Through the Eyes of Food.  Instead, it describes the major alternative teaching strategies that the author has found to be successful.  


In addition, Author’s Notes provides the acknowledgements of the individuals who have been invaluable resources in the analysis of biology instruction and, therefore, in the development of Biology Through the Eyes of Food.
